15 Fun, Weird, & Unexpected Interview Questions (With Sample Answers)

As a hiring manager, you probably ask similar questions to most of your candidates — “What’s the greatest challenge you’ve overcome? What interests you in our company?”

Most of these questions are standard and evoke similarly typical responses. In fact, if a candidate has plenty of experience interviewing, she can probably answer without much thought.

Now, imagine you ask your candidate this — “If you were a pizza delivery person, how would you benefit from scissors?”

This question changes the conversation a bit. Suddenly, you’ve caught your candidate off-guard. She’s not sure how to answer, but after a pause, she says, “I suppose I would use scissors the same way anyone else would. I wouldn’t necessarily use it on the job, but I could use it at home to cut things.”

You might be thinking you haven’t gained much insight into your candidate from this question, but that isn’t true. Weird, unconventional questions like this one allow you to investigate how quick-thinking your candidate is and how well she handles stress. Additionally, it helps you get a glimpse of your candidate’s true personality.

In fact, funny and unexpected questions have proven so useful during the interview process that big corporations like Apple and Hess tend to use at least one during their interviews.

To provoke a more honest, insightful conversation during your next interview, consider asking one of these weird, unexpected questions.

Funny Interview Questions

1. “How would you solve problems if you were from Mars?”

This question, asked by Amazon, helps you see if your candidate can think outside what’s traditional or normal. You’ll want your candidate to demonstrate an ability to problem-solve even under bizarre circumstances. Her answer can show you whether she’s capable of entering a new workplace environment and evaluating it fairly before offering solutions.

For instance, an ideal candidate might say, “If I were on Mars, they’d likely have their own problems separate from those on Earth. First, I’d conduct research to determine cause and effect, and then I’d offer potential solutions.”

With this answer, your candidate has shown an ability to be thoughtful and analytical when making decisions.

2. “What do you think of garden gnomes?”

This question, asked by Trader Joe’s, is a ridiculous and silly question. More than anything else, it’s intended to loosen the candidate up, see a glimpse of their personality, and gain insight into culture fit.

There’s no right answer to this question, but if your team likes to be sarcastic with one another, you might want a candidate to say, “If I could get a job as one then I probably wouldn’t be here today talking to you.”

Ultimately, if your candidate is able to handle this curveball with ease, it shows an impressive ability to react quickly to bizarre circumstances.
