Reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Pope Francis is “not a man of God” are false. Putin made no such statement—the fake quote stemmed from a number of fake news websites.

According to PolitiFact, the fake claim was published by several disreputable/clickbait or fake news websites, including Conservative Report and YourNewsWire. The article claimed that Putin criticized the pontiff by saying that he was “not a man of God” and simply pushed a political ideology on people. It purported:

President Putin has slammed Pope Francis for “pushing a political ideology instead of running a church”, and warned that the leader of the Catholic Church “is not a man of God.”

Pope Francis is using his platform to push a dangerous far-left political ideology on vulnerable people around the world, people who trust him because of his position,” Putin said.

If you look at what he (the Pope) says it’s clear that he is not a man of God. At least not the Christian God. Not the God of the Bible,” Putin said at the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Kronstadt.

The report, however, is entirely fabricated. While many of the websites offer no disclaimer, there is no evidence that Putin ever made any such statement. And although Putin did, in fact, visit the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Kronstadt recently, he made no mention of the pope.

Putin and the pope have met on several occasions, but their conversations have been more focused on foreign policy during those meetings. The pope has warned, however, that the U.S.-Russia alliance and other international alliances are “dangerous,” explaining that those foreign powers “have a distorted vision of the world.”
