Winterfell is Mine: The New Game of Thrones Season 6 Teasers
Game of Thrones Season 6 Teasers are here. We tell you how you can get your own personalized Tweets from the Game of Thrones account and what these teasers tell us about the Season ahead.
Game of Thrones dropped three new teasers.
Game of Thrones and HBO have done something interesting with their marketing campaign. They’ve released three teasers that you can have Tweeted to you personally based on your House Allegiance. If you want to get your own, Tweet @GameofThrones and hashtag your Tweet with #HouseLannister, #HouseStark, or #HouseTargaryen. Depending on which House you send them you get a different teaser Tweeted to you. They’ve done interesting viral marketing in the past. For Season 4 if you Followed @GameofThrones you were Tweeted Visions from the Three Eyed Raven. Most of these were old footage though, these are brand new. They give us a hint of what is to come. So let’s breakdown the three teasers and figure out what they tell us about Season 6.
The Stark teaser is going around the fastest so let’s start with that one. Lightening strikes a stormy sky. We pan back to reveal a tattered and torn Stark banner waving above a Northern tundra. Then a voice over begins. Ramsay Bolton says: “Winterfell is mine. Come and see.”
The lightening adds a great touch of drama, but the stormy sky could easily symbolize the struggle of the Stark family thus far. It has been a long, dark road for the Starks and it will likely get darker before it gets lighter. The voice over reminds us that the Boltons hold their family home and that any of the Starks, (ahem, Jon), will likely have to fight their way through the psychotic Ramsay to get it back. This probably foreshadows a major battle scene we know is coming, **SPOILERS AHEAD**: Episode 9 this Season will likely be the Battle of the Bastards, Jon Stark vs. Ramsay Bolton over Winterfell and this teaser hints that hard. **END SPOILERS**.
The Targaryen teaser is similar formula to the Stark one. A torn and tattered Targaryen flag hangs over a burning landscape, choked with thick black smoke. A voice over begins in Dothraki. The voice is likely that of Khal Jhaqo, who we have yet to meet but who Dany will meet in Season 6. The translation to English goes, “You are Nobody. The Millionth of your name. Queen of Nothing.”
When last we left Dany she was surrounded by a horde of Dothraki and will likely be brought before their Khal early next Season. Reports indicate he won’t be a huge fan of Dany, which is confirmed by this teaser.
The Lannister teaser is a interesting. It follows the same formula as the other two, a torn and tattered Lannister flag with an ominous voice over from the High Sparrow, but it also shows what would otherwise be a peaceful sunset and the ramparts of King’s Landing. “Everyone of us is poor and powerless,” says the High Sparrow. “And yet together we can overthrow an empire.” In the background you can hear “Shame, Shame, Shame,” the words Cersei’s tormentor yelled during her Walk of Shame.
We thought the High Sparrow was a pawn when he was first introduced, but by the end of Season 5 he held three members of the royal family in his dungeon. He took Cersei down, we know she isn’t defeated, but her imprisonment and Walk of Shame was a major defeat. If he can do that to one of the most powerful people in Westeros what else can he and the Sparrows do in Season 6?
Cersei and the High Sparrow early in Season 5.
It seems like the teasers have a bit of misdirection in them. **SPOILERS AHEAD** By all accounts, the Starks are going to have a great year. Jon will be resurrected by Melisandre and will lead an attack on Winterfell and win. Dany will escape and possibly gain a Dothraki army. Both of their teasers are incredibly bleak, an icy landscape and a burning field are in the background of each respectively. Of course the backgrounds might be there partially because they look really cool, but they probably mean something. On the other hand, the background of the Lannister teaser is very happy, a beautiful sun set. King’s Landing looks fine, no destruction, no reminder that Winter is finally coming, no fire. So maybe their teaser is misdirection too. The Lannisters could have their worst year yet. **END SPOILERS**
The footage of the three tattered flags and the backgrounds probably are just for promotional purposes and won’t actually appear in Season 6. The voice overs might be dialogue, but then again they could also be just for these teasers. What they really do is hint at troubles ahead. We’ve heard a lot of bad things that could happen in Season 6, from the Wall coming down to King’s Landing being sacked. What’s for sure, the remaining Starks, Dany, and the Lannisters have troubled times ahead. We’re off books so anything can happen going forward. Season 6 begins April 24th, let the game begin…
